Cushions!

Ultimately, the comfort of your sofa hinges on the quality of its cushions. The available options play a pivotal role in determining the final comfort. But what should you choose? Below we have written a short explanation to help understand the choices.

FEATHER DOWN CUSHIONS

FEATHER DOWN CUSHION

A combination of Feather/Down cushions are celebrated for their opulent softness and luxurious feel, providing a cosy seating experience unlike any other material.

These cushions are highly favoured by many for their comfort and relaxation and are available with different mixes.

80% Feather / 20% Down (standard) to 100% Down, the ultimate in softness, providing a "sink-in" sensation and delivering an incredibly plush feel to your sofa or chair. Typically, it finds its place more commonly in back cushions rather than seat cushions.  Full Down cushions are much more expensive than mixing with feathers.

Feathers are not for the lazy sofa sitter! Regular fluffing is essential for maintaining the shape and loftiness of feather cushions. Feathers may gradually flatten and loose volume, necessitating occasional adjustments to revive their fullness..   Loose synthetic alternatives are available if clients suffer from allergies or request hypoallergenic options.

EXAMPLES : We recommend Feather/Down mix cushions for our Garrick Sofa and Waterloo Sofa seat Cushion. Our traditional Syon Sofa - this has a feather/Down fixed back. Feather/Down mIx are used in all back cushions unless a firm modern feel is required.

FEATHER/DOWN WITH FOAM WRAP

FEATHER FOAM WRAP CUSHION

A hybrid HR foam and feather cushion filling merge the luxurious feel of a feather cushion with the structural support of foam, often preferred for both seat and back cushions, though predominantly used for seat cushions. This design involves enveloping a foam core with a "duvet" of feathers, providing the best of both comfort worlds.

EXAMPLES : We recommend Feather/Down with Foam core seat cushions are used for seat cushions that require a little more support - and a little less pouring! Beckford Sofa and Alexander Sofa/Arm Chair , Ladbrook Sofa

FOAM/FOAM WRAP

Consideration is given to each project to ensure the right foam is selected to offer the most appropriate finished feel.  At Lawson Wood we only use foam with a High Resiliency that has been constructed to last whilst offering varied density depending on the commission.   Foam is typically used in banquettes, the central core of seat cushions and some modern designs where the sofa shape needs to be sculpted.  Foam cushions with a Dacron wrap or a loose fibre wrap can be used in cases where allergies are a concern or a firmer, shaped cushion is required.

EXAMPLES OF FOAM BUILDS : Banquettes and shaped sofas.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FEATHER AND DOWN

FEATHERS

These constitute a bird's outer layer, primarily sourced from the wings and back. Feathers possess a quill and belong to the outer covering of the bird. They are sturdy but tend to be less soft compared to Down. Feather material is less expensive, but due to the presence of quills, they may not last as long as Down.

DOWN FEATHERS FOR CUSHIONS

DOWN

Found beneath the protective layer of feathers, Down consists of fine, insulating clusters that lack quills.  Down feathers keep their shape due to the 4 dimensional strands, compared to feathers that flatten easily.  It is renowned for its exceptional softness, durability, and superior insulation properties. Down material tends to last longer and is pricier due to its luxurious feel and longevity.
